Three ways to stay healthy this Winter
Hot chocolate season. Curled up on the couch in your comfiest pyjamas season. When you think of Winter, you may also be thinking of the dreaded cold & flu season. As the temperature drops our immune systems do not function optimally, meaning that you are not imagining that you are far more susceptible to getting sick at this time of year. With that in mind, we’ve listed our top three tips to keep you healthy this winter.
Get active (and outdoors!)
In case you needed another excuse to exercise, physical activity has been shown to push your antibodies and white blood cells to circulate more rapidly. This means they can detect illness earlier then they may have otherwise, giving your body a chance to build a stronger defence. Exercise has also been shown to assist in flushing bacteria out of the lungs and airways as well as lowering the release of stress hormones which leave your body much more susceptible to illness. Rug up and get outside for a long walk, run or bike ride in the fresh air or get to the gym. Your body will thank you for it.
Cook this immune boosting Red Lentil Dahl
Give your body a fighting chance by nourishing it with immune boosting fuel. This Vegan Red Lentil Dahl is packed with anti-inflammatory turmeric and ginger which add both flavour and a serious immune boost to this cosy stew. Curcumin in turmeric is a powerhouse for fighting certain viruses and the gingerol in ginger is know to be a potent anti-inflammatory.
- 2 tbs olive oil
- 1 onion diced
- 1 tbs grated ginger
- 1 red chilli deseeded and finely chopped
- 1 tomato finely chopped
- 2 tbs coriander (cilantro) roots and stalks finely chopped
- 6 curry leaves
- 1 tsp yellow mustard seeds
- 2 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 2 cloves garlic finely chopped
- 1 cup red lentils
- 3 cups vegetable stock
- 1 cup coconut milk
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 lemon juiced
Place a large pot over your smallest burner set to a medium heat. Add the olive oil (you can also use coconut oil or ghee) and the onions, ginger, chilli, tomato and coriander roots. Add a couple of pinches of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are sweet and golden, around 5 minutes.
Add the curry leaves and mustard seeds. When the mustard seeds start to pop add the rest of the spices and garlic. Cook until fragrant. Add the lentils, stock and coconut milk and when it starts bubbling reduce the heat to low.
Let the dahl bubble away for 20 minutes or so or until the lentils collapse and the dal becomes beautifully creamy. Taste and adjust the seasonings as necessary and add a squeeze of lemon. Serve with rice or on its own.
